Next Step

Well…apparently, I was the silly one during the timeframe of my last post. I barely know how to describe my recent experiences with the public education system while still staying somewhat nice. Therefore, I refrain, and simply summarize by stating our request has now been denied 46 times – 50 if you count the four private schools we recently visited. What’s more is in spite of it all, we continue our quest.

Why? Because there is not another option giving Alexis the mental, academic, social, and developmental stimulation a typical, lower grade elementary classroom will give her. Because she has worked incredibly hard and diligently to achieve this level of development, and she deserves the opportunity to continue progressing forward. Because she wants to experience the same sort of schooling her friends get to experience. And, because this window of opportunity will soon draw to a close, making it essentially now or never.

Thus, our next step is to raise money for a private school. Due to my recent experiences with them, I believe with money in hand, a private school will accept our request for Alexis to participate in a Kindergarten or 1st grade classroom (depending on academics) with me as her volunteer assistant.

The goal is to raise $2,000 - $2,500. I will be able to make monthly payments on the balance. If successful and Alexis is able to progress one more year at the private school, I will plan in advance to submit for scholarships and grants, however it’s too late for the current school year.

I ask for your financial assistance because beyond perspectives of whether or not the public system is following Federal Law, Alexis Watson is just a kid who wants the opportunity she thought she was working towards for the past thirteen years. As her mother, I not only support and advocate for her, I also truly believe in her abilities and potentialities, and, above all else, I want to see what she is capable of achieving. What’s more, I believe there must be a school somewhere within our nation who will allow Alexis the opportunity to try a typical academic curriculum within a typical classroom setting.

Alexis and I will be at the Jade Boutique in Hotchkiss, Colorado Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (9/4, 9/5, 9/6). There will be items for sale, brownies to nibble, music for the ears, petitions to sign, and chit-chats to be had.
