The Adventures of Time

...The adventures of a bit of kaleidoscopic time can be eye opening, then sublime,
when contemplated in the retrospect of today's evolved present-time...

-- Summary of Einstein's Self-Written Obituary

Can you believe after all these years I finally clicked the little, blue, "F" button permeating our internet screens? As a result, it appears you are quite likely a breathing, human being whom I have not talked to in a good long while. I bet some of you wondered if I had literally gone crazy and/or fallen off the horizon of our Earth. For me, the last few years have felt like both.

It has been a wild roller-coaster ride since moving to the big city of Salt Lake. Yet for a myriad of reasons, Alexis and I find ourselves waking up each morning excited for what the day might bring us. We partake in events we enjoy, and we are learning. What's more is life has evolved in a manner where everybody involved with our lives are people I am not arguing/fighting with.

Our most recent round-of-events leading to this exciting moment was with the school district. Towards the end of last year I began seeing significant improvements in Alexis' ability to learn new things. I approached school personnel in attempt to explore educational programs that would give Alexis the environment and stimulation I felt she needed in order to make the most out of her "open window," as I saw it.

Well...after a long summer which flew-by quickly, Alexis and I found ourselves sitting at a table with seven people who were deciding what was best for Alexis' future. What's more, six out of those seven people barely knew Alexis, if they even knew her at all. Then to top it off, they all firmly agreed Alexis was not capable of accomplishing anything more than the educational option they were offering ... It felt like the first year of public preschool all over again.

Thus, as a result of losing the battle, I decided to finally follow-through with all my past talk about home schooling. And guess what? The first day of school, August 25th, 2014, Alexis walked for the first time completely unassisted, aside from the use of walking canes which she had not really practiced with. Can you believe it?????? She's ready! Soon she'll be walking by herself! :)

She is also using her voice to communicate. She's signing more and more of her words together, and many times they form complete and understandable sentences. She passed her first reading vocabulary test of ten words with 100% accuracy, and has picked up a whole bunch of others since. Two days ago she colored a circle and triangle darkly and clearly, without going outside of the lines. She's surprisingly fast at basic crossword puzzles, and she knows how to get to the library by herself. (I don't let her, except for the one day I told her she could, then followed her.)

I started this blog because some people have helped us get our home schooling program up and running, and I wanted them to see the results of their assistance. When I found it linked to my old friends on facebook, I was excited to tell you what Alexis is doing because many of you are friends who have known Alexis since her birth, and/or you have seen her throughout her challenging years. And even though it was other events directly leading to our current situation, we wouldn't even be close to observing Alexis' current abilities if it were not for all of you at Fleet, Timberlakes, Aikido, and other little nests scattered throughout the city and globe. I don't know if I have expressed my thanks enough, thus Namaste! Alexis and I are grateful our paths have shared past walking time.

Wishing you all well,
--angie
